What you’ll need
  • Your Trézor device and cable
  • An offline-friendly notebook for your Recovery Seed
  • A desktop/laptop with admin access
  • 10 minutes of uninterrupted time
At a glance

Goal: Initialize, verify firmware, create a new wallet, and securely back up your seed.

Warning: Never type your Recovery Seed into a website, chat, or screenshot app.

Unbox & Inspect

Verify integrity before connecting anything.

Check the basics

  • Packaging intact and untampered.
  • Device body, buttons, and ports clean.
  • Cable seated firmly; no loose pins.

If anything looks off, stop and contact official support. Authenticity matters.

Prepare your space

  • Work at a desk, not on the move.
  • Silence notifications; avoid screen sharing.
  • Have a pen ready for your Recovery Seed.

Good hygiene

Only download software from the official source. Avoid “sponsored” links or look-alike domains. Bookmark the correct site for future updates.

Install the Desktop App

Use the official wallet suite for setup, firmware checks, and day-to-day use.

Download

  1. Open your browser and go to the official download page.
  2. Choose your OS (Windows, macOS, Linux) and install.
  3. Launch the app; keep it updated when prompted.

On macOS, you may need to approve the app in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

Connect device

  • Use the provided cable to connect via USB.
  • Allow the app to detect and pair with your device.
  • If asked, approve the connection on the device screen.

Verify firmware

During first run you’ll be prompted to check firmware. Approve the check on device. If an update is available, follow on-screen instructions and keep the cable connected.

Safe: Updates signed by the vendor. Never use third-party firmware.

Create Your Wallet & Set a PIN

Your PIN protects physical access; your Recovery Seed restores funds.

New wallet

  1. In the desktop app, choose Create new wallet.
  2. Confirm the action on the device screen.
  3. Read the security reminders carefully before proceeding.

Secure PIN

  • Pick a PIN you can recall without writing down.
  • Avoid sequences (1234, 0000) or birthdays.
  • Enable auto-lock to require the PIN on wake.

Multiple wrong PIN attempts increase delay—deterring brute force.

Recovery Seed backup

  • Write down the 12/24 words shown on the device.
  • Use the provided cards or archival-quality paper.
  • Verify each word spelling; run the on-device check if offered.
  • Store in two separate, private locations.

Do not type your seed into any computer or phone.

First Receive & Test Transaction

Start small, verify everything, and build muscle memory.

Receive safely

  • In the app, choose an account (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum).
  • Click Receive and confirm the address on device.
  • Copy the address only after you’ve matched it on the device screen.

Send a small test

  • Send a tiny amount to a second wallet/exchange you control.
  • Confirm details on the device screen before approving.
  • Wait for confirmations; learn fee controls and mempool basics.

Label & organize

Use account labels and notes for clarity. Consistent naming helps you avoid errors later, especially with multiple networks or tokens.

Hardening, Extras & FAQs

Add layers, reduce risk, and know what to do if things go sideways.

Advanced options

  • Passphrase (25th word): Adds a secret layer. Memorize; never store with the seed.
  • Multiple accounts: Separate long-term savings from spending.
  • Watch-only: Track balances on a viewing device with no keys.

Troubleshooting

  • App can’t see device → try another cable/port; keep the app updated.
  • Firmware loop → follow official recovery steps; don’t unplug mid-update.
  • Lost device → Funds are safe with your Recovery Seed; restore on a new device when ready.
